The youngest rugby league referee was Guy Clifford (Australia, b. 27 June 1958) who passed his examination when he was 9 years and 310 days old in Sydney, Australia, on 2 May 1968.
Guy joined the Junior Referee's Association, a subdivision of the New South Wales Rugby Football League (though the word 'football' was removed in 1984).
The group was started because it was around then that the league saw a sudden rise in the number of rugby teams and there weren't enough people to referee them. A decision was thus made to train boys of 9 to 15 years old.
Guy passed his exam on the 2nd of May 1968 and was considered an efficient and capable referee by several judges, all before his 10th birthday.
