Longest galactic jet
- WHO
- Unknown
- WHAT
- 1.5 million light year(s)
- WHERE
- United Kingdom
- WHEN
- 01 January 0001
In December 2007, astronomers announced their discovery of an energetic jet of matter being emitted from a supermassive black hole in the centre of the active galaxy CGCG 049-033. Measuring some 1.5 million light years long, the high energy jet happens to be aimed directly at a nearby galaxy. Any planets in that galaxy in the line of fire would have their atmospheres ionised and any life would be extinguished.
