With two balls of their 50 overs to spare, hosts New Zealand (350 for 8) completed the highest run chase in the history of women’s One-Day International (ODI) cricket to humble South Africa (346 for 6) at Wellington’s Cello Basin Reserve on 1 April 2026. New Zealand skipper Amelia “Melie” Kerr – who made the highest individual women’s ODI score of 232 not out against Ireland in 2018 – weighed in with a blistering 179 not out from the 139 balls she faced, hitting 23 fours and a six. Wicket-keeper/middle-order batter Izzy Gaze’s 48-ball 68 – made in a fifth-wicket stand of 120 in just 13.3 overs with Kerr – proved decisive as the White Ferns set the seal on a two-wicket win.

New Zealand’s 350 for 8 surpassed the 341 for 5 scored by India when they beat Australia (338 all out) at the ICC Women’s World Cup on 30 October 2025. It’s also the second-highest total batting second in a women’s ODI, after India’s 369 all out against Australia (412 all out) on 20 September 2025.

The 696 runs scored in the match is the third-highest on record, but still well short of the 781 runs made by Australia and India on 20 September 2025.

Earlier, South Africa’s Anneke Bosch (91), captain Laura Wolvaardt (69) and Chloe Tryon (52 not out) had taken the visitors to an imposing total that they would have been confident of defending at the Cello Basin Reserve.
