Anatomy of a Fall (France, 2023; directed by Justine Triet), Barbie (USA/UK, 2023; directed by Greta Gerwig) and Past Lives (USA, 2023; directed by Celine Song) were all nominated for Best Picture at the 96th Academy Awards on 10 March 2024. It was the first time in the history of the Oscars that as many as three female-directed movies had made the shortlist for the event’s most prestigious annual award.
In four previous years, 2010–11 and 2021–22, the nominations for Best Picture included two films made by female directors. Triet is also nominated for Best Director at the 96th Academy Awards, up against four male directors of movies which are also nominated for Best Picture.
The trio of female directors in the frame for their Best Picture-nominated films also have a chance to win 2024 Oscars for Best Original Screenplay (Song and Triet) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Gerwig).
