At the 7th All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) in Lagos, Nigeria, on 21 November 2021, Iba One (Mali, b. Ibrahim Mahamadou Fily Sissoko), aka “The King of African Rap”, won four Continental awards – Album of the Year (the two-volume My Empire), Songwriter of the Year, Best African Pop and Best Inspirational Music – Male Artist (all three awards citing ”Education”, feat. Oumou Sangaré) – in addition to the Regional award for Best Male Artist – West Africa. In six previous editions, no artist – male or female – had collected as many as five awards in one night.
In 2014, US-born Nigerian vocalist Davido (b. David Adedeji Adeleke) won four awards, including Artist of the Year and Song of the Year (“Aiye”). Another Nigerian singer, Wizkid (b. Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun), the most decorated AFRIMA artist, won eight awards in 2016–21, including three apiece in 2017 and 2021. Wizkid collaborated with US rapper Drake on his worldwide smash hit “One Dance”.
