The 45th Annie Awards (2018) witnessed an 11-time winner in the computer-animated fantasy film Coco (USA, 2017). Produced by Pixar Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures, Coco snapped up Best Animated Feature and trophies for Animated Effects, Character Animation, Character Design, Directing, Music, Production Design, Storyboarding, Writing, Editorial and Voice Acting (Anthony Gonzalez as Miguel, an aspiring young musician). The ceremony took place at the USA’s University of California, Los Angeles on 3 February 2018.
Coco – with 13 nominations in total – downed Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, Cars 3, Despicable Me 3 and The Boss Baby in the Best Animated Feature category. Six films have won 10 awards at a single ceremony: Mulan (1998, from 12 nominations), The Incredibles (2005, from 16 nominations), Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2006, from 16 nominations), Kung Fu Panda (2009, from 16 nominations), How to Train Your Dragon (2011, from 15 nominations) and Inside Out (2016, from 14 nominations). The Annie Awards were established in 1972 by ASIFA-Hollywood, the Los Angeles branch of the International Animated Film Association, to honour excellence in animation at the cinema and on TV.
