The greatest certain altitude at which any flowering plants have been found is 6,400 m (21,000 ft) on Mt Kamet (7,756 m (25,447 ft) in the Himalayas by N D Jayal (then director of the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute) in 1955. They were Ermania (=Solms-laubachia) himalayensis, belonging to the crucifer or cabbage family, and the alpine ranunculus (Ranunculus lobatus=trivedii), belonging to the buttercup family.
