The articulated DAF Super CityTrain buses of DR Congo are 32.20 m (105.64 ft) long and can carry 350 passengers comfortably. They weigh 28 tonnes unladen. The CityTrain project was introduced in 1989 after the collapse of the national bus company, which left thousands without transport and caused widespread unrest. Although the 'official' carrying capacity of the Super CityTrain is 350 (110 seated and 140 standing in the first trailer, 60 seated and 40 standing in the second), up to 600 passengers have been carried at one time. To ensure that the journey is pleasant no matter how crowded things become, music is played over loudspeakers along the length of the bus. Safety is also a priority, with the speed of the 256-bhp (188-kW) DAF FT 2805 tractor unit limited to 42 km/h (26 mph) through the 'blocking' of the fifth and sixth gears and the modification of the fuel-injection pumps.
