The first vessel to complete an entirely submerged circumnavigation of the globe was the USS Triton SSRN 586 between 24 February and 25 April 1960. The nuclear-powered radar picket submarine, under the command of Captain Edward L. Beach, covered 26,723 nautical miles (49,491 km; 30,752 miles) over 60 days 21 hours, starting and finishing at the St Peter and Paul Rocks in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.


The circumnavigation was codenamed Operation Sandblast.
