A widely distributed Eurasian species of vespertilionid bat, it has been recorded from northern Norway, well inside the Arctic Circle, and with one specimen documented from Austertana in Norway, at a latitude of 70°N 25°E.

Closely related to the familiar serotine bat, the northern bat is the most abundant species of bat in northern Eurasia, its distribution stretching from eastern England in the UK and northern Scandinavia to the northern major island of Hokkaido in Japan and down as far as northern India.
