Strongest measured sonic boom by an aircraft
- WHO
- F-4 Phantom
- WHERE
- United States
- WHEN
- 1967
In 1967 the US Government performed a series of tests to discover whether or not an aircraft’s sonic boom could be used as a weapon. An F-4 Phantom was used to perform extremely low and fast flybys over Nevada, one of which resulted in a sonic boom measuring 144 pounds per foot2. No injury was reported by the researchers who were present, despite being exposed to a sonic boom produced by a jet fighter travelling at Mach 1.26 and at an altitude of just 95 feet above the ground level.
