The largest sculpture made of plastic bags consists of 68,000 plastic bags in the shape of an octopus. The sculpture was constructed by over 200 student volunteers for the Ci Yuan Community Centre Youth Executive Committee (Singapore) at the National Youth EnvirOlympics Challenge, Singapore, on 20-21 April 2012. The sculpture is 8 m in diameter and 1.6 m high. The bags used for the sculpture were collected over a period of 3 months by 22 schools. The sculpture was created to raise awareness about environmental issues and the consumption and disposal issues related to plastic bags. After the record attempt the octopus sculpture is to be sold to Chuan Durn Plastics Industries Pte Ltd, a local recycling company, and the proceeds will be donated to the National Kidney Foundation to subsidise dialysis patients.
